Young Will Byers was one of the people taken, though when he arrived in the Upside Down he managed to escape and hide from the monster, communicating with his mother by manipulating electricity and opening up a small, brief portal in his own home. Using its own form of dimensional travel between worlds, the Demogorgon would swipe living things and store them in the Upside Down's version of the Hawkins Library for future feeding. DEMOGORGON GONE WILD The resulting chaos allowed Eleven to escape the lab and the monster - labeled a "Demogorgon" later on by the crusading kids - to secretly take and murder people and animals from around town.

Whether her powers caused the rift outright or whether they just cracked open a gate that already existed underneath Hawkins is unclear. Brenner, she made contact with it and unintentionally opened up a hole to the Upside Down. While doing this, Eleven also saw a humanoid monster feeding off a giant, mysterious egg. Brenner was using her to spy on Russian agents overseas. One young lab rat, marked with a number "11" tattoo, could enter an ethereal void, a space created by her own mind, and use it to see people far away. When the kids got old enough, and trained to use their powers well enough, they were being used to spy on enemies of the U.S. The lab was designed to house young children born with extraordinary telepathic abilities.

PROJECT X So what opened the rift in space/time, creating a ghoulish gate to the underworld Upside Down? Well, it just so happens that the humble town of Hawkins was home to a secret government project, headed by Dr. Clarke even represents the mirror world as being underneath them, upside down, during his "Flea and the Acrobat" on a tight rope explanation of inter-dimensional travel. When Mike, Dustin, and Lucas start to think their friend Will might be trapped in an alternate dimension, similar to the Vale of Shadows from Dungeons and Dragons (though, that's not an official D&D location), Eleven dubs the place the "Upside Down" due to it representing a backwards and warped version of the real world. The entire realm is filled with haze and mist and floating toxic spores. The only mirrored life seems to be flora, with all the other spaces filled by roving nasty monsters. UPSIDE WHAT NOW? Employing the multiverse theory here, the "Upside Down" is an alternate dimension that runs parallel to our own and has the same exact mappings and landscape, though its environment is that of decay and rot and nightmares.
